TRAVELING TO MYANMAR
Yangon International Airport located in Mingaladon, at 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of downtown Yangon, is the primary and busiest international airport in Myanmar. The airport’s old terminal is used exclusively for domestic flights, and the new terminal, in operation since May 2007, handles international flights. Airport capacity was boosted to 6 million passengers per year in early 2016. All ten Burmese carriers and about 20 international airlines operate out of Yangon International.
Although most travellers arriving from international destinations enter Myanmar through Yangon International Airport, some carriers also land at the Mandalay International Airport and the Nap Pyi Taw International Airport.
Due to a lack of international carriers operating direct flights from international destinations to Yangon, most visitors will have to travel through other larger destinations in the region such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore. Regional carriers flying to Yangon include AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, and Vietnam Airlines.
An Airport Tax of 10 USD is levied on all passengers leaving Myanmar on international flights, which is paid at the airport of departure.
A foreign national wishing to enter Myanmar must obtain a visa unless he or she is a citizen of one of the 8 eligible visa exemption countries. All visitors must hold a passport valid for 6 months.
Myanmar launched the eVisa system on 1 September 2014. eVisas are issued online for tourism and business purposes only. An eVisa is issued within 3 working days, is valid for 90 days from the date of issue and allows a stay for up to 28 days (for tourists) or 70 days (for business travellers).
Please see the official Myanmar Government website for full details: www.evisa.moip.gov.mm
Participants are requested to check with the Consulate/Embassy of Myanmar or diplomatic mission in their home country or with their travel agency for visa requirements. It is the responsibility of the participant to obtain a visa if required.
